Passepartout Duo

"Resonant Spaces" is about bringing music to the people, where they live.

Inspired by the intimate dialogues and the quiet natural ambience of an imagined ancient world juxtaposed against Chongqing's modern and chaotic city scape, " Resonant Spaces " is a project about listening closely to the sounds in one's home and the music hidden in and outside their walls. A portable musical setup containing small electronic instruments and microphones, amplifies the room as the two musicians play music written during their time in Chongqing. The interplay between incidental sounds, the audience, and the musicians themselves creates a secondary musical dialogue. The music can only be heard through the headphones provided to the audience members, creating a personalized atmosphere around each attendee. Including sounds from the Guqin and other ancient Chinese instruments, the piece is inspired by the slice of Chinese culture that has been introduced to the duo over this first 2 month trip to the country.

Through the creation ofinterdisciplinary collaborationsand immersive musical eventsthat thrive at the intersection of different cultures and aesthetics, pianist Nicoletta Favariand percussionist Christopher Salvitohave earned a reputation together as advocates for contemporary classical music as they continue their years-long journey around the world. Influenced by their ever-changing location, the duo commissions new repertoire, composes original pieces, and films music videosthat seek to capture their interpretations in a creative and engaging format.

Passepartout Duo’s project through the Nordic countries in 2018 was met with support from the Nordic Culture Fund and Nordic Culture Point, and brought the duo to premiere nine works at the Dark Music Days Festival (IS) and the Summartónar Festival (FO).

Collaborating across disciplines is also at the core of the duo’s work, with projects ranging from recording music for a full ballet production with Santa Monica’s Barak Ballet (US) to composing music for an animated short by Anna van Riel (BE).

The duo’s debut EPof original music, a collaborative project featuring prints by visual artists Yumo Wu and Yannis Zhang (CN), took inspiration from a small fishing village in the north of Iceland, called Ólafsfjörður(2018). The album has been broadcasted on Melbourne's PBS, BBC 3 in the UK, and Rai Radio 3 in Italy.

The ensemble has performed at prominent music festivals like the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (UK), the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival (US), and the Festival de La Habana de Música Contemporánea (CU). The duo was also awarded an ensemble fellowship at Eighth Blackbird’s inaugural Creative Lab in 2017.

About this Residency

While at DAC (在DAC时)

Passepartout Duo will be finishing the last leg of their “Sound Envelopes” project’s journey, and in doing so is seeking to find ways of presenting their work in an installation format rather than a live performance, a new modality for the duo. In addition, their time in Chongqing represents the culmination of a 2 month trip to China, and their first time in the country. Having started a number of collaborations with artists throughout the country, the duo will work toward presenting an evening length event representing their work here in Chongqing and Beijing.

Introduction to Previous Works

Sound Envelopes from Rauma

(Rauma

Sound Envelopes are electronic musical postcards, created by Passepartout Duo.

Each wooden postcard contains an original print by Mari Aspola. A headphone jack allows a recipient of the postcard to enjoy an original musical track when the postcard is plugged in through USB. Alongside the postcard, instructions are given directing the recipient to pass the postcard along to a friend, through the post or in person, who lives further east than them. The goal is for these Sound Envelopesto end their journey at our exhibition in the Nakanojo Biennale in Japan, where the story of their travels will be told. Listeners of the postcards are encouraged to be in touch with the duo, to document the journey. These original five sound envelopes were given to recipients in Rauma, Finland on Christmas Day, 2018.

The five tracks were written and recorded by Passepartout Duo in Rauma, Finland during our eight-week-long residency with RaumArs Artist in Residence Program for our inaugural set of Sound Envelopes. Inspired by the aesthetics in Old Rauma, the UNESCO Heritage town center featuring wooden houses and hidden courtyards, our music endeavors to encompass the mystical background present in everyday Finnish life. The music is written for a set of portable electronic instruments that allow the duo to play anywhere. Alongside amplified vibraphone bars, a main feature of this instrumentation is the bitKlavier, a digitally prepared piano instrument that augments and manipulates the keyboard’s sound in realtime.

Ólafsfjörður

Ólafsfjörður is an audio-visual collaboration between Passepartout Duo, and two Chinese artists, Yannis Zhang and Yumo Wu. While the four artists were in residence together in Listhús Artspace in Iceland, the duo wrote and recorded 4 original tracks seeking to encapsulate a unique moment. During the winter in the north of Iceland, the sun does not rise above the mountainous peaks of this isolated fjord. Musically, the remnants of a once booming fishing industry are also a major source of inspiration.

The project took form as a vinyl EP the was produced by the two Chinese artists in their studio in Beijing. The artwork was created by Yumo Wu through the cyanotype process, also capturing the uniquely dim light in Iceland at that time.

As We Speak (正如我們所說的那樣)

Poor Margie(可憐的Margie), by Florent Ghys

As We Speakis a concert program and ongoing research concept that focuses on the interaction between music and the recorded human voice. Arranged for a portable instrumentation utilizing a small keyboard and amplified vibraphone bars, this flexible program has included works by Rzewski, Forsberg, Ghys, and Akiho.

As We Speak addresses a key question for the duo: how can we bring contemporary classical music anywhere?

Moving Ground (移動地面)

A collaboration between Passepartout Duo and Beijing based painter Jia Jing, raw data from images of paintings are converted into audio and manipulated through live electronic improvisations. The sounds create a new painting when vibrations from a vintage guitar amp move pigments across paper. Titled "Moving Ground", the piece focuses on visual and auditory feedback loops, and how mixing mediums can impact the creative process.
