Every movement, perhaps a mundane daily commute, becomes in the eyes of the artist more like a prose poem about migration.<\/span><\/section>\n

Based in Sydney,\u00a0<\/span>Lige\u2019s practice consistently revolves around\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>movement<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>home<\/span>\u201d<\/span>. For the artist, vehicles are not only part of the urban landscape but also links to family memory, serving as metaphors for broader themes of migration and belonging. Straight, unobstructed roads and efficient, orderly transportation fully embody the pursuit of efficiency in urban life. Yet behind this drive for expediency lies a subtle\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>absence of being<\/span>\u201d<\/span>. City planning not only maps our roads but also disciplines the way we perceive the world. Anxious or eager, we fixate on the destination, losing awareness of our surroundings along the way. This process of movement often goes unrecorded in life<\/span>\u2014<\/span>what the artist describes as a kind of\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>transient amnesia<\/span>\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0Within\u00a0<\/span>Lige\u2019s artistic framework,\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>movement<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>amnesia<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0are no longer mere phenomena, but a field of inquiry where social structures and individual consciousness intersect and collide.<\/span><\/section>\n

Lige<\/span>\u00a0is an artist deeply attuned to personal experience and the surrounding environment. Their work is sincerely rooted in everyday life, carrying profound emotional weight and social reflection. In the surreal and poetic public transportation of Chongqing,\u00a0<\/span>Lige\u00a0has found a unique resonance<\/span>\u2014<\/span>where\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>commuting<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0becomes a tangible, miniature form of poetic migration. The winding paths along mountains and rivers, the twists and turns of climbing slopes and descending steps, provide the most fitting vocabulary for\u00a0<\/span>Lige\u2019s artistic expression. \u300a<\/span>\u71c8\u5152\u6643<\/span>\u300b<\/span>\u00a0\uff08<\/span>Metrical Promenade<\/span><\/i>\uff09<\/span>\u00a0\u662f\u6211\u7684\u7b2c\u4e00\u500b\u500b\u4eba\u5c55\uff0c\u5728\u5341\u65b9\u7684\u99d0\u7559\u4e5f\u662f\u6211\u7b2c\u4e00\u6b21\u8fd1\u8ddd\u96e2\u63a5\u89f8\u570b\u5167\u7684\u7576\u4ee3\u85dd\u8853\u884c\u696d\u3002\u901a\u904e\u9019\u4e00\u500b\u6708\uff0c\u6211\u89c0\u5bdf\u4e26\u9ad4\u6703\u5230\u4e86\u8a31\u591a\u7121\u6cd5\u5728\u5225\u8655\u91cd\u73fe\u7684\u3001\u96e3\u7528\u8a9e\u8a00\u5f62\u5bb9\u7684\u3001\u7368\u5c6c\u65bc\u91cd\u6176\u7684\u4eba\u60c5\u5473\u3002\u5c55\u89bd\u7684\u6a19\u984c<\/span>\u201c\u71c8\u5152\u6643\u201d\u4e0d\u50c5\u662f\u6211\u9019\u6b21\u99d0\u7559\u9ad4\u9a57\u7684\u7e3d\u7d50\uff0c\u4e5f\u662f\u6211\u751f\u6d3b\u4e2d\u4e00\u7a2e\u6301\u7e8c\u7684\u72c0\u614b\uff0c\u751a\u81f3\u53ef\u4ee5\u7a31\u70ba\u4e00\u7a2e\u672c\u6b21\u99d0\u7559\u5275\u4f5c\u7684\u65b9\u6cd5\u8ad6\u3002\u5728\u4ea4\u901a\u79fb\u52d5\u4e2d\uff0c\u6642\u9593\u7684\u9577\u5ea6\u8b8a\u5f97\u548c\u8def\u5f91\u4e00\u6a23\u53ef\u4ee5\u6e2c\u91cf\u4e26<\/span>\u8a08\u5283<\/span>\uff0c\u5728\u9019\u7a2e\u65e5\u5e38\u88cf\uff0c\u79fb\u52d5\u5fc5\u9808\u5177\u6709\u76ee\u7684\uff0c\u4e14\u8a08\u7b97\u79fb\u52d5\u7684\u552f\u4e00\u4f5c\u7528\u5c31\u662f\u62b5\u9054\u76ee\u7684\u5730\u3002\u7136\u800c\u9019\u7a2e\u8a08\u91cf\u537b\u662f\u4e00\u7a2e\u58d3\u7e2e\u79fb\u52d5\u904e\u7a0b\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u4f5c\u70ba\u4e58\u5ba2\u8b8a\u6210\u4e00\u500b\u500b\u5fae\u5c0f\u7684\u55ae\u4f4d\uff0c\u5728\u79fb\u52d5\u4e2d\u5ea6\u904e\u7684\u6642\u9593\u537b\u88ab\u5ffd\u7565\u3002\u6211\u5e0c\u671b\u901a\u904e\u300a\u71c8\u5152\u6643\u300b\u8868\u9054\u51fa\u9019\u7a2e\u96a8\u8457\u6a5f\u68b0\u79fb\u52d5\u7684\u904e\u7a0b\u624d\u662f\u771f\u6b63\u7684\u4e3b\u9ad4\uff0c\u5176\u4e2d\u860a\u542b\u8457\u8a31\u591a\u53ef\u4f9b\u63a2\u8a0e\u7684\u610f\u8da3\u3002\u300a\u71c8\u5152\u6643\u300b\u65e8\u5728\u8907\u5beb\u55ae\u7d14\u7684\u79fb\u52d5\u904e\u7a0b\uff0c\u4ee5\u53ca\u79fb\u52d5\u4e2d\u7684\u4eba\u7522\u751f\u7684\u60c5\u611f\u9ad4\u9a57\uff0c\u4e26\u7531\u6b64\u63a2\u8a0e\u4eba\u8207\u6a5f\u68b0\u7684\u95dc\u4fc2\uff0c\u800c\u4e0d\u662f\u91cd\u5236\u62b5\u9054\u7684\u5feb\u611f\u3002\u6211\u5728\u9019\u4e9b\u65b0\u7684\u4f5c\u54c1\u4e2d\u76e1\u529b\u6700\u5927\u5316\u4e86\u904a\u8d70\u7684\u96a8\u610f\u548c\u81ea\u7136\uff0c\u4e26\u6dfb\u52a0\u9032\u4e00\u4e9b\u6211\u81ea\u5df1\u5728\u5341\u65b9\u99d0\u7559\u4e2d\u7684\u5c0f\u5f97\u745f<\/span>\u2014\u2014\u7562\u7adf\u4e5f\u7b97\u5728\u91cd\u6176\u71c8\u5152\u6643\u4e86\u4e09\u5341\u5929\u3002<\/span><\/section>\n

Metrical Promenade<\/span>\u00a0is an exhibition of attempts. I started off with not-so-meticulous planning: planning about travel, planning about making (art), planning about writing and researching, and even planning about going through Chongqing\u2019s historical archives, especially the suburb Huangjueping I am staying at. Well, I quickly abandoned these ideas upon arriving. Partly because the layover airport forgot to deliver one of my suitcases that has all my winter clothes and art books to Chongqing (I have it now, don\u2019t worry), but also because I felt a deep sense of familiarity and tranquillity while finally realising the fact that I am at Chongqing. Chongqing has always been quite special to me as someone who visited this city multiple times before. This place connotes affection, openness, and community.\u00a0<\/section>\n
<\/section>\n
On the way to Dimensions Art Centre, I passed vast fields of still-green crops; I saw local residents meandering in the landscape that is made of machines and plants. These sceneries are the most common while taking the metro, besides the complete darkness under the ground, yet they contain an essence of time, which is temporality; the passengers know that these sceneries will be passed, and the experiences of seeing and observing inside a moving public transportation vehicle are temporary. This exhibition attempts to replicate, or, to say, imitate the process of being in transit accompanied by gigantic machinery that we as passengers choose to ignore. It is to consciously dwell on the temporality of moving. I think all forms of life are imitations of time, as is the process of reaching somewhere. I use the new works in this show to measure the stretched time. Taking public transport is another way to walk in the landscape via planned meandering within a smaller scale of the mass. Thus, the title \u2013\u00a0Metrical Promenade<\/i>\u00a0\u2013 is assembled.\u00a0<\/span><\/section>\n

Assemblage is also key to this exhibition. By assembling locally-captured imageries and sounds through digital manipulation, I hope to grasp my very own lived experiences of being en route and moving without a secured destination, and immerse them in Chongqing\u2019s specific landscape that is made of machines, humans, and nature. Speaking in a more art-historian-academic way, I hope to hone in on the actual process of moving and making while attempting to surrender to the spontaneity of happenings. I had a plan to overcomplicate the viewing experiences for the audience but eventually decided to incorporate more recognisable and legible visual motifs. Perhaps the viewers should not have to learn to enjoy contemporary art. I wish this exhibition is fun to visit, and let\u2019s all use this chance to wind down.<\/span><\/section>\n

Lige is a Gadigal-based emerging artist (and curator, sometimes) who constantly contemplates suburban landscapes. Their practice revolves around the locational lived experience in Northern China and the influence of digital culture. Working with language and translation, they seek to explore the intricate connection between temporality and presence through video-based synchronisation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the performance, I transcribe these letters in English onto a notepad for an extended duration of time while the monitor live feeding my transcription through document camera, until I reach an extent of emotional or physical fatigue. This work is to gather and re-enact memories before me. Thinking of how distance is manifested through sent and received letters, I reflect on my experiences with relocating during the process of transcribing and interpreting my parents\u2019\u00a0written words. I question my distance from my native language while unavoidably recognising that the act of translating doubles as an attempt to bridge that distance. When I turn to another letter nonchronologically, their voices echo around me, continuously revealing stories and resonating to the past. Gift is a three-channel film that incorporates mixed media animation featuring my mum Guanglan, her mum (my grandma) Jinhao, and me. I asked Guanglan and Jinhao to reflect on their hoarding habits while filming their most common routine commute. Thinking of how the form of obsessive accumulation can be manifested tangibly as the trauma of displacement from one’s home, I identified shared experiences of moving and migrating throughout generations. Movement serves as a measure of displacement in the comparative montages of my closest matrilineal family members as they share their life stories in a confessional manner.\u00a0<\/span><\/section>\n

We, as two international students\/artists, are interested in this act of \u2018cosplaying\u2019 and how the imitation of a disregarded underdog community can build shared identity. The two communities differentiate drastically from each other, yet their similarly marginalised experiences transcend the primitive class difference. Is the imitation a way to mock? Or is it what the netizens call\u00a0<\/span>\u6587\u827a\u590d\u5174<\/span>, \u201cthe renaissance\u201d- an attempt to revive camp-y Chinese internet culture?
