CV of the Artist:

PhD in University of Art and Design (UAD), Cluj- Napoca(2025-present)

Mara Cucu

Mara Cucu (b. 2000) is a Romanian artist who explores a hybrid approach to visual art. She integrates traditional painting techniques with compositional and chromatic principles derived from design. Her technique involves the use of classical pictorial means—such as color, gesture, impasto, and texture—while combining them with a geometric and structural mindset inspired by design principles.

Her artistic practice investigates the relationship between the metaphysics of the object and the affective memory attached to it. She is interested in how human perception undergoes a gradual erosion of the fascination once projected onto objects.

Drawing from Ellen Dissanayake’s concept of “making things special”—the human capacity to extract an object from banality and invest it with significance—Mara uses her practice to re-examine these objects through a lens that blends artistic ritual with structural precision. To “make something special” means taking an everyday object or a simple gesture and pulling it out of the ordinary. You do this by giving it extra attention—repeating it, adding details, or making it stand out until it’s no longer just “normal” anymore.

About Residency:

Mara Cucu:

The project for Chongqing Dazu residency focuses on the relationship between human memory and the specific places that anchor it, analyzing how the passage of time influences the significance attributed to cultural landscapes.

Specifically, I will research oneiric realism, narrative solitude, symbolic realism, and the geometry of the everyday, as well as metaphysical painting and formal introspection within the Chinese art scene. A part of this research explores the antithesis between the contemporary urban landscape—a vivid, futuristic environment—and the historical depth of local traditions. I will analyze the tension between the modern metropolis, which represents a projection into the future, and the silent permanence of heritage sites, such as the Dazu Rock Carvings and their rural settlements.

This painting series aims to facilitate the understanding and contextualization of transnational artistic ideas, approaches, and problematics.
