Shu Isaka(日本|JP)

DAC Emerging Resident Artist
Residence Period:
2023.5.30 - 2023.7.8

CV of the Artist:

Completed the doctoral program of Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music, Department of  Intermedia Art. While researching imperceptible phenomena in the natural environment and human activities in response to them, he creates works in the realm that crosses scientific knowledge and narrative imagination. Using fieldwork footage, visual media such as 3DCG and VR, and self-made observation devices, he explores a unique storytelling style that mixes documentary and fiction techniques.
In recent years, he has traveled to volcanic regions in various countries to make video works that explore the special communication between volcanoes and humans that occurs in volcanic activities and in the lives of people living in the surrounding areas. This is not about supernatural phenomena, but rather about risk communication, such as how to positively perceive and calculate risks associated with natural phenomena that behave in an uncertain manner. However, in his filmmaking, he does not reduce it to the realm of disaster prevention engineering or sociology, but aims to expand it with a leap forward in fiction.

Intersection Of Universes

During their Artist in Residency at Dimensions Art Center, Benjamin Efrati and Shu Isaka will work as a duo. Exploring multiple practices (animated and still images, installation, VR, performance), they will produce a media art exhibition from June 29th to July 5th.

This exhibition will be augmented by a series of events around the duo’s artistic practices, such as performances and concerts, talks with local art critics, university researchers, and art collectors, as well as film screenings, maximizing the residency’s potential to create a research group around the affordances of the intersection of science, spirituality, and technology.

The project’s main goal is to create a VR experience based on Chongqing, its urban environment, ancient Chinese body practices and philosophy, in the light of the relentless technological evolution which characterizes the 21st Century. Connecting distant areas of experience and fields of knowledge, Intersection of Universes proposes a narration-based meditation focusing on the intersection of technology and spirituality, geology and philosophy, particle physics and anthropology. This narrative framework involves rethinking the documentation tools used in scientific field research (photogrammetric modeling, soundscapes, 360° videos). The VR experience is intended to provide the audience scientifically accurate knowledge as well as novel speculative and fictional ideas.
