Exhibition Preface
印像這個東西總是要具備先聲奪人的特質才容易被銘記，重慶她具備。起初大家被光怪陸離吸引晃眼而過的都感嘆她的“魔幻”。這是一件好衣裳，光鮮還怪異。
A certain loudness is often required to leave an impression and Chongqing is not short of it. In the beginning we are attracted by her dazzling colours, fantastical cityscapes and call it ‘magical’; like a wonderful outfit, gaudy and strange.
繼而當你撥霧眼觀卻是看見了她的參差，或者說重慶之“魔幻”是重慶人和自然因地制宜靈魂協作出的結果。
But as you venture through its foggy surface, you will discover its jaggedness. Perhaps the so called “magic” is the result of the cooperation between the spirit of the natural environment surrounding Chongqingers and Chongqingers themselves.
此次藝術家寶賢在居傾一月，坦言時間雖短，但她對重慶的印象正在打破重立。原初入重慶的感嘆流逝到現在定睛之處皆是活力與生命力，讓人流連其中便感滄海一粟。
Bo Choy has been a resident artist inChongqing for only a short month but she has dismantled and revised her impression of Chongqing. Her lament of the rapid transformation of the city due to urban development is also met by the vitality, dynamism and energy of the city.
建築是凝固的歷史，直觀無言。如此一來重慶倒是也符合“在消失的城市”這一說，秋蛇蛻皮一般，蛻了一身身的皮，四時不同年歲更新，但她也在崛起，在重生，在新與舊的更迭中姿態萬千。立於此間這群人永遠鮮活炙烈，活在山霧林樓，車海橋龍間穿梭，尋活路尋生路。
Architecture solidifies history, silent but direct. Chongqing, just like a snake shedding its skin, fulfils the title of a“disappearing city” with her ever changing outlook. But in her rise and rebirth, in between the new and the old, she shines forth elegance and grace.The energy and passion of the people of Chongqing meander through the fog, trees and cityscapes, in search for a living, or a way of life.
藝術家寶賢此次的作品名稱“活路兒”來重慶本地方言，意指：維持生計的工作之意，生活的保障就是“活路兒”。是求活尋生的道路，亦是生活軌蹟的道路，因為要活下去而顯得那麼鮮活。這是一個通透且豁達的詞，明明在奔生活但卻不哀怨。因著渴時一杯茶，燥時一口酒，熱時一絲涼，煙後一聲嘆，款款落於城市間都是那一顆顆塵埃在跳動。就像那些老去寂靜的歷史被後生仔吹了一口氣頓時灰塵揚起。
The name of the artist Bo choy’s work this time is “living”. The term “living” in our dialect refers to a way of maintaining livelihood. It is as much a path of survival as it is away earn. It is in our constant quest of a way of living that the term is imbued with such vigour, directness and open-mindedness. The people of Chongqing work hard yet they don’t moan. They have a cup of tea to quench their thirst, a glass of wine to refresh their bodies; they slow down in the heat and a take a deep breath of contentment after a smoke. Just like the aged, silent histories ofthe city fall like dust and is being revitalised by the breath of the youth.
嘆流光拋人，不如笑新桃替舊符，且看歲月都在輪迴之中。
Lamenting the passage of time, it is better to face the change of old and new with a smile, reincarnation always settles inthe years.
寶賢或許是路過的旅人，遙望嶺間星光落落似好奇般便踏入了這一夏的重慶，觀得一景後立於山崗想著來時至此的一幕幕回憶。
Choy maybe a passing traveller, stepping into the heat of Chongqing summer looking into the stars falling in between the ridges, waves of memories emerge as she stands in the mountain.
The wind blows across the building
and you feel it in your eyes and fingertips;
as it does your heart and hair.
Sigh this life, too long, too beautiful,
but the beauty is short for a moment;
Crying laughing you can’t sleep,

藏在城市森林裏的觀望台瞰視
在呼吸、俯仰之間
火爐蒸發出山城的全息影像
Hiding in the forest of the city looking down
Momentarily, in between breaths
the Mountain City rises above
the steam of the furnace like a hologram
城上城下的碎石瓦片
隨著知了領導的炎夏節奏
此起彼伏
The gravel and debris fall by the wayside
up and down the city
following the summer rhythm orchestrated by the cicadas
挖掘機附和著
手舞足蹈的揮來揮去
拍子與打樁機的樁鎚一致
Echoed by the bulldozers
whose limbs swing left and right
matching the tempo of the pile driver
在仲夏的山城巷子，每十五分鐘
都會依稀地目睹霧都的影子
奶白的噴霧讓長江顯得濃滑
Midsummer in Mountain City Lane
One could vaguely witness the shadow of the City of Fog
Changjiang is made silky smooth with the milky water spray
棒棒扛着擔子
燕一般的步伐輕盈上落
重慶的靈魂
在梯坎間上下流離
BanBanrs with their shoulder poles
climb up and down the city light like swallow steps
The spirit of Chongqing
lingers up and down the stairs
塗山伯伯懷念著愛人
九二年由重慶南下廣州
一去不返
回過頭來的
時間也沒有
就溜走了
The old man from Tushan reminisces
his former lover
Emigrating South from Chongqing to Guangzhou in 1992
and never returns
There is not even time
for the head to turn
and she slips away
發電廠的煙囪下
曾經下著灰色的雨
落地後變成色彩斑斕的水粉
Grey rain once fell under
the chimneys of power plant
turning into colourful gauche as
it hits the ground
七彩繽紛的顏色
如記憶
不忘其所始
不求其所终
在蒸氣裡幻滅
受而喜之
忘而复之
The dazzling colours
like memories
do not forget where they began
do not mind where they end
They vanish like steam
accepting whatever that come their way

Introduction to the Artist
蔡寶賢是一個在香港出生、生活在倫敦的藝術家。她用視頻、表演和聲音來做創作。她用故事、音樂、文字和服裝為創作手法來探討歷史、社會生活上的議題。她會挪用到民俗、傳統儀式的符號，形成富有魔幻、神話、甚至乎荒誕色彩的作品。
Bo Choy is a Hong Kong-born, London-based artist working across film, performance and sound. She uses fiction, music, writing and costumes as artistic devices to navigate through the social, the historical or simply what it means to be living in a technologically driven, capitalist society. Often borrowing tropes from Eastern folklore traditions and rituals, her use of costumes and fiction results in works that merged the everyday with the fantastical, the mythological and the absurd.
