Intersection Of Universes-Open Lab

Open lab is a unique attempt for the two resident artists to communicate in depth with the audience. Their creation medium is a virtual experience presented by VR technology. They hope to invite more people to participate in the discussion, so that more participants’ ideas can be integrated into the creation. They hope that the “Intersection of Universes (IoU)” can be jointly expressed, explored and Expanded to more possibilities during the interaction.

Topic Of The Project
Intersection of Universes (IoU) is an artistic duo formed by Benjamin Efrati and Shu Isaka. While Efrati’s media art production in the last 10 years focuses on human evolution and the function of Prehistory in contemporary narratives, Isaka’s films have consistently focused on the invisible friction between of natural phenomena and contemporary human activity.
The project focuses on the interaction between digital technology and ancient cultures, considered as universes, and aims at producing an original vision of the future. This strongly relates to uncertainty, and can be apprehended as an imaginary “forbidden zone”.
In this perspective, İoU documents contemporary reality through 3D scanning, documentary film, VR experience design and by collecting material evidence of its observations. These items are tools, and they also produce artworks using the grammar of art installation.
Throughout IoU’s residency at DAC, the duo familiarized itself with ancient philosophical notions which have left a strong imprint on Chinese culture, such as “wuwei” (non-action). Such principles were considered during the production of the pieces on view in the final exhibition.
