Curator’s Foreword

温蔚華老師是一位擁有多重專業身份的社會工作者,她的工作觸及教育、建築、生態、文化、商業行銷等多個領域,這正因她的人生實踐致力於城市的環境教育與社會關懷,面對城市也持有著多元且立體的看待視角。然而在這次駐留中,温老師面對重慶這座城市,選擇以純粹的藝術家身份與之對話,其原因是在於她與重慶之間有著父親早年軍旅生涯形成的,如血緣般的鄉愁。

對於藝術家温蔚華來說,重慶是一座有著熱情卻不熟悉的城市。她也曾短暫來過重慶,但如今重慶現代化飛速發展的變化已然與她記憶中的印象拉開了差距。這次在這座現代化超大城市中,令藝術家更為感歎的是,重慶依然還保留著鮮活的原鄉生活景象,那裏正是那份鄉愁的歸宿。

正如藝術家為展覽的命名——“重重疊疊”,這不僅僅在描繪重慶這座立體式城市景觀的直觀印象,更是新舊人文的錯綜交織。藝術家在3月、5月、7月進行間歇式、階段性的駐地創作過程中,其創作也呈現不同階段,從客觀的寫實紀錄,到主觀的抽象感受。

起初,在藝術家行走於城市大街小巷中,重慶的城市景象在作品畫面中表現為印象式的;隨後,橫空截斷的構成畫面表現著現代與原鄉生活之間的張力與和諧,這看似割裂卻又內在統一的存在。

重慶,究竟會以何種面貌承接他既有的文化張力?

這個答案難以盡述,更加不會在作品中道個明白,藝術家索性放開,在抽象的塊面與筆觸中自由表達著對這座城市景象的熱情與觸動。

Wen Weihwa has multiple professional identities in the community, and her work touches on various fields such as education, architecture, ecology, culture, business marketing, etc. This is due to the fact that her life practice is dedicated to urban environmental education and social care, and she also holds a diversified and three-dimensional perspective on the city. However, during this residency, Wen faced the city of Chongqing and chose to dialogue with it as a pure artist because of the blood-like nostalgia between her and Chongqing, formed by her father’s early military career.
For the artist Wen Weihwa, Chongqing is a city of warmth but unfamiliarity. She has also visited Chongqing briefly, but the rapid modernisation and development of Chongqing has now become a far cry from the impression she remembers. This time, in this modern mega-city, what makes the artist even more impressed is that Chongqing still retains a vivid scene of the original countryside life, which is exactly where the nostalgia belongs.
As the artist named the exhibition – “Overlapping”, which is not only depicting the intuitive impression of the three-dimensional cityscape of Chongqing, but also the intertwining of old and new humanities. During the artist’s intermittent, staged residencies in March, May, and July, her creations show different stages, from objective realistic records to subjective abstract feelings.
At first, as the artist walks through the city streets and alleys, the cityscape of Chongqing is represented in the images of the work as an impressionistic one; then, the horizontally truncated composition of the images expresses the tension and harmony between the modern and the original countryside life, which appears to be divided but is intrinsically unified in its existence.
What will be the face of Chongqing to take up his established cultural tension?
The answer is difficult to describe, and even more so, it will not be clear in the works. The artist simply lets go and freely expresses his passion and touch for the cityscape in the abstract blocks and brushstrokes.

Artist’s Statement
重慶,是我一直想一窺究竟的城市,
不僅他曾經作為陪都,
對每一個中國人,在政治上的意義;
更是我父親在世前,生生念念的記憶場景
也許是鄉愁,也許是文化的積壘,
我以他者的角度,觀看這個城市的起承轉合
這之中,我在旅人和記錄者之間不斷轉換角色
重重疊疊,虛虛實實
魔幻之城在江面的倒影
境內境外,有蒙太奇般的場景重複輪替
三峽壯麗,成為他再寫實不過的亙古山水
重慶同時擁有油彩的熾烈、和水墨的輕逸
能夠為這個城市以畫註記
惶恐中,我深深……
引以為傲。

Chongqing,
A city I have long been eager to explore,
not only for its significance as a wartime capital,
holding political importance for every Chinese person,
but also as the vivid memory landscape my father held dear in life.
Perhaps it is nostalgia, or the accumulation of culture,
that drives me to view this city’s transformations from an outsider’s perspective.
In doing so, I constantly switch between the roles of traveler and chronicler.
Overlapping layers, a blend of illusion and reality,
the magical city’s reflection on the river,
both inside and outside, with montage-like scenes repeating cyclically.
The grandeur of the Three Gorges stands as the most realistic and ancient landscape.
Chongqing possesses both the fiery intensity of oil paint and the delicate grace of ink wash.
To be able to document this city through my paintings,
In anxious, I am deeply…

我的藝術啟蒙於父親的水墨書畫,因制式教育使然,人生順勢導入商業行銷的生活場域,期間不斷以藝術和社區作大眾與小眾溝通媒介,也開創學齡生的藝術教育實踐於生活之中。

環境教育與社會關懷是我人生最重要的實踐,工作中所觸及的建築、空間,生態、文化……的學習成為我現今繪畫創作的養份。

一個藝術家應該也具有社會學家的情懷,非學院的繪畫思考,讓我更能悠遊於與社會溝通之初心。

My artistic enlightenment began with my father’s ink and wash paintings. Due to formal education, my life naturally transitioned into the realm of business marketing. Throughout this journey, I consistently used art and community as mediums for communication with both the masses and niche audiences. I also pioneered the integration of art education for school-age children into daily life.

Environmental education and social concern have been the most significant practices in my life. The exploration of architecture, space, ecology, culture, and more through my work has become the nourishment for my current painting creations.

I believe that an artist should also embody the spirit of a sociologist. The non-academic contemplation in my approach to painting allows me to navigate with ease in adhering to the original intention of communication with society.

Ginkgo is the feast of the golden autumn in Chengdu. The yellow and clear green like gold foil are spread on the canvas, depicting the distant mountains and close views, and setting off the people living in the mountains.

In the bustling streets of the town, people and cars shuttle, shops and neon lights are used against the red glow of the evening, laying out a kind of nostalgia that is hard to escape.
